Galaxy Tab vs iPad – Samsung were given the opportunity “to put things right”

September 30th, 2011

steve jobs called samsung

By none other than Steve Jobs himself, who was CEO of Apple at the time.

When the initial patent rows between Apple and Samsung began, Steve Jobs is reported to have called the executives at Samsung and given them an opportunity to put things right before all the court battles got nasty.

Apple are said to be one of Samsung’s largest customers, buying in the region of $7.8 billion in parts from the tech giant, including chips, memory and most recently reports have arose of screens coming from Samsung too. Since the court battles have begun to get nasty, Apple have turned to other manufacturers so they are less reliant on Samsung for the supply of parts to their devices.

We will soon see who the courts think are right, as law suit vs counter law suit are coming to an end, for the time being at least.

Disney bring out new Cars App which interacts with “Disney AppMates”

September 30th, 2011

disney ipad app mates

Disney are taking gaming on the iPad to a whole new level with the new Cars App – to be launched on October 1st for iPad 2.

The app is essentially a free-roaming game where the cars are free to wonder around Radiator Springs. There are objects within the environment for the cars to interact with including races. Each AppMate needs no set up or linking to the iPad, it will work with the app straight out of the box.

Once the different “AppMates” are placed on the screen, each car will react differently, i.e. Lightning McQueen will be fast, Mater is slower, and when roaming or racing at night, the cars headlights come on and are perfectly positioned in front of the car.

As this is the first game to use a toy on the screen of the iPad it will be interesting to see how other companies try and follow in Disney’s footsteps.

Finally competition for the iPad – the Amazon Kindle Fire

September 29th, 2011

kindle fireAmazon are the first and only company to date to bring some real competition to the iPad, in the form of the Kindle Fire.

Since HP reduced their TouchPads to an extremely low $99, it was clear there was a gap in the market for a low priced touch-screen tablet. Amazon have made exactly that with the Kindle Fire – priced at a very, very competitive $199, and available on November 15th – very good timing!

The kindle fire has a 7” display and uses dual core processors combined with Amazon Cloud Storage to power the device. This combined with Amazon’s own version of the Android 2.1 operating system means this small device is great for apps, games, songs and movies.

Well done Amazon, we can’t wait to see it.

Wall Mounted iPad Stand

September 28th, 2011

wall mounted ipad standThe i360 Stand is one of the only iPad Stands that can be securely wall mounted, with no adaption to the stand or the base.

Discreetly hidden within the metal base of the stand are keyways that will mount the stand onto your required surface, don’t worry the stand comes complete with a fitting template, instructions, and even the screws to make sure you get it right first time!

Once the stand is mounted on the wall it then provides a multitude of solutions for the iPad, whether it be a digital photograph frame, or an elevated position for watching video’s, the stand will be secure. You can then simply un-mount the stand from the wall using the keyways to put it back on a desk. Very simple.

Apple denied patent for “Multi-touch” technology

September 28th, 2011

ipad touch screen technologyYesterday Apple’s appeal to the United States Patent and Trademark Office denied Apple the patent for “Multi-Touch” technology.

The patent was initially applied for in 2007 alongside the launch of the first iPhone, at which point the application was denied. Apple have since appealed against the decision which has again been denied.

The reason – Multi-Touch technology now refers to nearly every tablet and touch screen device on the market, and it is the name of an operation when using the devices not just a single piece of the technology.

Will Samsung see their patent for wireless technology treated in the same way?

Apple officially confirm iPhone event for 4th October

September 28th, 2011

iphone 4 or 5 event invitation

But… that is all they have confirmed.

As mysterious as all of the invites sent by Apple, this one is no different. The invitation image comprises of app logo’s, with the calendar showing Tuesday 4th, the clock showing 10 o’clock, the map showing the location, and a phone symbol. The simple text accompanying the invite reads “Let’s talk iPhone.”

This product launch will be remarkably different to the last few, with it being held at the Apple Campus in Cupertino rather than a San Francisco Arts centre, and with Tim Cook in the driving seat rather than Steve Jobs.

Other than that, and what or how many iPhones will be unveiled, remains to be seen. We look forward to 4th October, thanks Apple.

iPads help keep your brain young!

September 27th, 2011

elderly using the ipadA retirement home in America has begun using iPads to help with resident’s memory and social skills.

Heath Central Park Nursing Home in Florida began the journey with an iPhone and have now developed into using an iPad 2. Previously the care home have tried using the Nintendo Wii console to increase the mobility of the residents but this proved to be too cumbersome and difficult. The iPad 2 and touch screen technology allows the residents to merely swipe their hand across the glass surface to interact with the object, with no mice or buttons or keys to press which they find difficult.

The range of apps available is also helping with memory and social interaction, with one resident asking his daughter for an iPad 2 as he enjoys using it so much.

Apple Reduces orders for iPad 2 by 25%

September 27th, 2011

ipad 2 orders are slashed by appleThe reports of the order reduction have come from two different sources both citing that the orders placed for the units in the Far East have been reduced by 25%.

Does this mean that Apple are expecting to be hit by the global financial crisis too? They have seemingly come off unscathed so far with all the tribulations around the world. The stock is growing and growing, the sales are growing and growing, the demand for new unreleased devices is growing and growing… A company the size of Apple wouldn’t stop orders of their stock unless they had a good reason.

Could it be that the company are moving some of the production to Brazil? We have had rumours that the company are setting up a supply chain in South America and plan to begin production here before the end of the year – is this the start?

Or are Apple removing the order from the Far East and in turn removing the order from Samsung because of their on-going court battles?
