IGZO and IPS display panels for the iPad 3?

December 31st, 2011

The iPad 3 rumours are hotting up again as we come into the new year. Rumours were also circulating that the device would arrive in January, though those were soon put to bed.

The latest information on the market, sourced from DigiTimes, suggests that Apple have turned to Sharp to manufacture the HD displays for the upcoming iPad 3. The company successfully manufacture IGZO display panels for an existing tablet device, meaning they are perfectly positioned to manufacture the new panels for Apple.

The IGZO panels provide high quality graphics at HD resolution without draining the battery life, something Apple are clearly making a priority for their tablet.

And when will we see the iPad 3? I predict around the same time of year as the original iPad and the iPad 2, April.

Could a Phone be Coming to the iPad?

December 22nd, 2011

PatentlyApple.com earlier this week revealed some 40 patent applications from Apple that have been published by the US Patent and Trademark Office this week.

The patents mainly covered advancing audio quality in future iPhones, including a noise suppression system with settings the user can change. However one of the patents shows a “speakerphone” being introduced into an iPad – which is communicating with an iPhone. At the moment the iPad just uses a “speaker” when video calling or face-time calling, could this just be a new term or is it specifically being referred to as a “speakerphone” for potential new developments in the future iPad range?

Would you use your iPad as a phone or tele-communication device? The size of the tablet itself suggests that you shouldn’t, however it isn’t like Apple to have not considered things like this.

What do Apple have up their sleeve for the next iPad developments?

Are Google Going to Release a Tablet in the Next Six Months?

December 22nd, 2011

In a recent interview with an Italian newspaper, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt revealed that in the next six months Google plan to market a tablet of the highest quality.

What does this mean for Google? Are they marketing a “new” tablet of their own? Partnering with another manufacturer to release a tablet together? Or simply reviving existing Android Tablets? With Google being behind the newest Android interfaces surely it will be a well powered device? However… who has heard of or bought the most recent Google powered Smartphone?

What does this mean to Apple? Well… in short I imagine nothing. I can see the scenario of Apple exec’s sat around a boardroom table discussing the latest projects. With the conversation going something like “Did you hear Google are releasing a new tablet?” (short silence) “Yeah. Next?”

Gameloft Launch iOS App Sale for Christmas

December 21st, 2011

Gameloft have clearly followed EA Games’ lead in reducing the prices of their top selling Apps in a bid to top the iTunes charts this Christmas.

Gameloft and EA Games are two of the most successful games publishers, and their games designed for iOS devices are just as successful as their main console games. The big games publishers like EA and Gameloft have really taken note of Apple in the last few years and push their big selling titles to the App Store at a similar time to the major consoles.

The bid to top the iTunes charts for Christmas will mean as soon as a new and shiny iOS device is unwrapped from underneath the Christmas tree, the lucky receiver of the gift opens up the App Store to see Gameloft titles topping the charts.

The special apps to look out for from Gameloft are Spiderman: Total Mayhem, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six and the new Assassins Creed app for both iPad and iPhone.

EA Reduce Price of Popular Titles

December 21st, 2011

In a bid to be top of the iTunes charts all over Christmas, EA Games have reduced the price of some of their best-selling iOS games in the app store.

Clever idea really – to reduce prices in a bid to be at the top of the app store, so when everyone opens their Christmas presents on Sunday morning and receives an Apple powered device, first thing they do is go to the App store and see EA’s titles splashed across all of the charts. The app store charts also freeze over Christmas, so the games giant are hoping it will give them the top spot for longer than usual.

Some of the games included in the list are newly released titles, such as FIFA 12, Tetris and Transformers.

Make sure you visit the app store to grab yourself a bargain before the prices hike back up!

A Digital Camera Peripheral for the iPad

December 20th, 2011

The new camera from Sakar is a digital camera for use directly with an iPad – no other computer needed! The camera has a micro-SD slot for a memory card but the main feature about this iPad camera is that it doesn’t need a computer. Once the camera is connected to the iPad you can download the accompanying app and edit the photographs, upload to Facebook, or store in the images in the Camera Roll for the iPad. A great “point and shoot” camera making taking photographs really easy for people of all ages.

Since the iOS 5 update making iPad’s and iPhone’s not needing to be connected to a computer I think we are more and more likely to see peripherals like this designed directly for the iPad, and I’m looking forward to seeing what is next.

iPad’s Market Share to Drop Below 60% this Quarter

December 19th, 2011

Apple have already achieved massive sales results because of the holidays, making their Q4 projected figures to already be at an all-time high for the company. However…. Due to the release of the Kindle Fire earlier this quarter, Amazon may just push Apple’s market share below its current high.

Many apple bloggers have said that the iPad will not be affected by the release of the Amazon Kindle Fire, and that the lower end tablets will stand on their own. I believe this to be true, and though the figures released in this report compare all tablets on sale not just the high and low end, there are some interesting results to be seen.

It is reported the iPad has a current share of the tablet market standing at 61.5%, but Apple Insider are reporting that the market share is expected to dip below 60%. The projected reason for this, obviously the Amazon Kindle Fire tablet. The only tablet other than the iPad to sell in any significant quantities.

How many iPads will be underneath trees this coming week – compared to the Kindle Fire?

(we clearly know the answer in the UK!)
